Details

Fax, also known as Telefax, is a technology to copy a document over an (initially analog) telephone line.
The document is scanned on the sender side, transmitted, and printed on the receiver side,
Typically the sender printed a report upon successful transmission.

Fax had quite some evolution, to implement higher resolution and to adapt to newer telephony standards and encodings.
This was splitted and standardized into 4 groups - Group 1 (G1) to Group 4 (G4) Fax.

For G1 and G2 Fax each of the 96 scan lines per inch was scanned and transfered as an analog signal, similar to analog TV.
Horizontal resolution was not standardized but a result of the quality of scanner, printer and the telephone connection.

G3 Fax was still designed fo analog lines but introduced digitizing each scan line and compression to reduce transfer time.
It supports resulutions from 100 x 100 DPI (dots per inch) up to approx. 400 x 400 DPI and transfer rates up to 14.4 kbit/s.
T.30 defines rates up to 33.6 kbit/s. G3 also introduced color Fax using lossy JPEG compression.

G4 is the first digital Fax protocol, the adaption of G3 to a 64 kbit/s ISDN line, and supports the same resolutions.
It also standardized the SFF format.

T.38 Fax addresses the problems of lossy voice Codecs, packet loss and latency of VoIP, which made Fax transmission
difficult. T.38 is also called FoIP (Fax over IP).

FRITZ!OS

In FRITZ!OS analog and ISDN Fax receiption is handled by faxd, for T.38 over VoIP in conjunction with voipd.

Fax submission from the Webinterface is managed by fax_send.lua using the libfaxsendlua.so interface to libfaxsend.so.

FRITZ!OS also supports analog or ISDN Fax devices connected to a FON or FONS0 port.

CAPI-over-TCP also supports Fax submission and receiption on a PC using a remote CAPI interface.

For Windows AVM provides the FRITZ!fax for FRITZ!Box package, which includes the NetCAPI to use the FRITZ!fax software,
which was previously bundled with AVM ISDN-Cards. FRITZ!fax comes with printer drivers to submit monochrome or color Fax.

For Linux there is an enhanced libcapi which supports the proprietary CAPI-over-TCP protocol.
It is bundled with ffgtk and its successor Roger Router, which provide the same functionality as FRITZ!fax.
