Details

kernel.image is the RTL96 gzip compressed Kernel image in uimage format.
It is uploaded to the SFP module by send-firmware.

It is a normal gzipped image with a prepended 64-byte uimage header:

$ hexdump -n 80 -C kernel.image

00000000  27 05 19 56 4f b2 d8 19  65 f9 a3 30 00 1d e7 24  |'..VO...e..0...$|

It could be "unpacked" by using dd:

$ dd if=kernel.image of=kernel.gz bs=64 skip=1

30620+1 records in
30620+1 records out
1959716 bytes (2.0 MB) copied, 0.0864518 s, 22.7 MB/s

$ gunzip -l kernel.gz

        compressed        uncompressed  ratio uncompressed_name
           1959716             4542608  56.9% kernel
