Filesystems represent the way how data is organized on storage devices. Some filesystems store the data internally in RAM (ie ramfs or tmpfs), many use Block-Devices to store the data (ie jffs2 or squashfs), some are virtual interfaces to processes and the kernel (ie proc or sysfs) and some access data on remote machines (ie nfs4).
