Details

GIF is a lossless palette based bitmap compression format developed by Compuserve. Typical filename extension is .gif.
It can store color images using a palette of up to 256 RGB colors, and it can also store Animations.

GIF was the first widely used color image format in the Internet and it is still used for Animations.
But GIF used the LZW compression format which was patented by Unisys, which brought a lot of licensing trouble.
This trouble was the reason for the development of the patent free PNG format, which widely replaced GIF.

The offiicial MIME type for GIF images is image/gif.

FRITZ!OS

FRITZ!OS uses GIF as one of the Graphics formats for the Webinterface, see the GIF-Files section.

To access GIF files AVM converts them to PNM format using giftopam.

giftopam is used by:

• picconv.sh
• captive_portal_upload_image
• dect_doorline_image_conversion.sh
• dect_bg_image_conversion.sh

djpeg and cjpeg can convert JPEG to or from GIF, but that's not used in FRITZ!OS.
