Details
TLS is a crypto protocol to provide secure communication over a network link. It wraps many unsecure protocols.
It is the successor of the now deprecated SSL 1.0 / 2.0 / 3.0 protocols.
The RFC links above explain TLS 1.0 / 1.1 / 1.2 / 1.3. Versions below 1.2 are also considered deprecated.
Besides secure communication TLS provides safe client and server identity using certificates.
