Details

EUI-64 (64-Bit Extended Unique Identifier) is the extended MAC address format.
EUI-64 uses 64 bits to address a device, unlike the classical EUI-48 MAC format which uses 48 bits.

The intention is to address more devices (and vendors), with a growing demand for addresses due to IoT.

An EUI-48 uses 24 bits for the vendor OUI and 24 bits for the device to address.
An EUI-64 uses 24, 28 or 36 bits for the vendor OUI and 28, 36 or 40 bits for the device to address.

There's a widely used translation method between EUI-48 and EUI-64, which the IEEE considers outdated:

EUI-48: 11:22:33:44:55:66
EUI-64: 11:22:33:FF:FE:44:55:66

In the middle of a EUI-48 a FF:FE is inserted to translate it to a EUI-64.

Some of the technologies using EUI-64:

  • ZigBee
  • Thread
  • IEEE 802.15.4 (Low Rate WPAN)
  • 6LoWPAN
  • IEEE 1394 (FireWire)
  • InfiniBand
  • IPv6 (modified)

Bluetooth-LE uses EUI-48.
