Description: | Highest element in the hierarchy of DNS host name resolution. |
Goto: FRITZ!OS - arpa - avm - box - bridge - internal - ip - lte - nas - powerline - repeater - smartgateway - SMW-Browser
Details
The TLD (top-level domain) is the highest element in the hierarchy of DNS host name resolution.
It is not an own protocol but part of the naming convention for public hostnames in the DNS protocol.
Example: gpl.boxmatrix.info
is the gpl
Subdomain in the boxmatrix
Domain in the .info
TLD.
There are different groups of TLDs:
ccTLDs
- Country Code TLDs - RFC-1591 - ISO-3166-1 alpha-2 (nonpub) - ie:.de .fr .nl
gTLDs
- Generic TLDs splittet into 3 groups:uTLDs
- Unsponsored TLDs - ie:.org .info
sTLDs
- Sponsored TLDs - ie:.edu .gov .mil
nTLDs
- New TLDs - ie:.box .fun .sport
FRITZ!OS
In FRITZ!OS DNS is served to the LAN by multid (routers) or rextd (repeaters) which both act as DNS proxies, adding hardcoded
hostnames like fritz.box and the custom hostnames in CONFIG_HOSTNAME plus all hosts in the LAN as subdomains of these.
For nearly 20 years this was no problem until new TLDs came out, .box
being one of them[1][2].
AVM forgot to register "their" fake domains in this TLD, and someone else took fritz.box[3] until it got suspended[4].
Fortunately AVM managed to register the most important of the .box
domains they used.
This article will collect all fake domains and TLDs AVM uses or used in their products, some of which turned DNS-Hijacking:
