Details
MIME is not a standalone protocol but an extension to protocols to describe media types which differ from ASCII text.
MIME was developed for E-mail which initially only supported 7-bit ASCII text, extending the SMTP, POP and IMAP protocols.
Multipart messages allow for mixed-type E-mails (ie: Text + HTML) and file attachments.
MIME type headers are an important extension to the HTTP and HTTPS protocols to specifiy media type and Charset encoding.
Examples
The HTTP header for UTF-8 encoded HTML:
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
The HTTP header for a JPEG image:
Content-Type: image/jpeg
FRITZ!OS
On a standard Linux system MIME types are defined in /etc/mime.types.
This would only be used by the boa webserver and boa.conf, but the file is not present.
In FRITZ!OS MIME types are defined in mime.cfg.
It is read by libwebsrv.so for MIME in HTTP / HTTPS headers.
it is also read by cableinfo for MIME in RTSP, which is HTTP based.
