Details

The Timezone is the offset of the official time of a Country or Region to the UTC.

It can be negative or positive and ranges from UTC−12:00 to UTC+14:00, mostly in 1 hour steps.
A few Timezones use "resolutions" up to a quarter of an hour.

The purpose of the Timezones is to compensate the rotation of the earth and to have similar time for morning and evening
worldwide. They depend on the longitude (angle compared to the IRM 0 degree reference meridian), adapted to the borders of
the respective Countries to simplify their usage.

Some Countries or Regions use the DST (Daylight Saving Time) as an additional 1-hour offset in summer.
This toggles for example the CET (Central European Time = UTC+1) to the CEST (Central European Summer Time = UTC+2)
for half a year. For CET this happens at the last Sunday in March and ends at the last Sunday in October, see the DST article.

FRITZ!OS

By default FRITZ!OS derives the Timezone from the Country setting, but it could also be tweaked manually.
This presets /etc/TZ (static) which is a symlink to /var/TZ (temp) to be writable, which is used to set the TZ variable in rc.conf.

TZ-Presets

Most Countries supported by FRITZ!OS just have one Timezone and a preset from:

/etc/default.<country>/TZ

<country> is the value of the Country variable.

For countries which have multiple Timezones (currently only Australia) another mechanism is used:

/etc/default.<country>/TZ_ext/Australia/<city>/TZ_Info
/etc/default.<country>/TZ_ext/Australia/<city>/TZ_String
/etc/default.<country>/TZ_ext/Australia/<city>/TZ_stringtabid
/etc/default.<country>/TZ_ext/Australia/<city>/TZ_isDefault (only for Sydney)

<country> is the value of the Country variable (061 here) and <city> is one of Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth, Sydney.
TZ_Info is a list of locations / cities in the respective Timezone, TZ_String is the preset for TZ.
The TZ_stringtabid contains the event number to lookup the menu Event-Text in the currently selected Language.

TZ-Strings

A minimum TZ string is a 3 or 4 letter abbreviation of a Timezone and the positive or negative hours to add to get the UTC.
This is negatively expressed - the left part of a "= UTC" formula, ie:

If DST is used the same is appended for the daylight Timezone, plus the comma separated start and end dates of the DST:

  • CEST-2 = UTC ==> CEST = UTC+2
  • ,M3.5.0/02:00:00 ==> DST starts in month March, 5th or last week, day 0 (Sunday) at 02:00:00
  • ,M10.5.0/03:00:00 ==> DST ends in month October, 5th or last week, day 0 (Sunday) at 03:00:00
