Description: | 1000MHz Quad Core MIPS32 / InterAptiv 34Kc Network SoC + VDSL frontend |
Chip-Details
RTL86 is the preliminary codename used here for the RTL8685
/ RTL8275
VDSL chipset, until a better codename is found.
This is originally a standalone router chipset used in many third party routers, like in this example design.
AVM uses it as the VDSL modem frontend of the FRITZ!Box 7520 v2 , the only model with CONFIG_DSL_RTL8685SB = 'y'.
There's no datasheet in the net about this chipset. Realtek only provides info for the old RTL8670 / RTL8270 ADSL chipset.
The RTL8685SB
is a networking SoC, the RTL8275
is the matching VDSL analog frontend.
According to this bootlog the RTL8685SB
is a quad core 1000 MHz SoC with this ID:
CPU0 revision is: 0001a120 (MIPS interAptiv (multi))
This is exactly the same ID the dual core Seale GRX and the quad core Falcon PRX chips report.
So this is likely also a dual core CPU with hyperthreading each, like the Falcon.
While AVM usually spends some RAM to a secondary CPU for the OS they did not do it in the 7520v2.
The following was my first assumption which is WRONG:
- Maybe they use the 1 MB
Scratchpad RAM
present in allInterAptiv
cores, which is freely configurable from 4kB to 1MB
to be Instruction Scratchpad
and/or Data Scratchpad
RAM, intended for systems that don’t have RAM.
- See chapter 6.2.1 of this PDF explaining
Linking for Scratchpad RAM
onInterAptiv
cores.
- 1 MB RAM is ok for some modem firmware, but not enough for a Linux (filesys+kernel+ram).
- That is why AVM runs all FRITZ!OS glue code on the main CPU of the 7520v2.
Fact is:
The 7520v2 runs a second linux for the Realtek frontend, located in linux.bin and booted by boot.bin.
It consists on a 2.7 MB LZMA compressed kernel which decompresses to 6.9 MB and a pretty compact 800 kB squashfs.
This requires at least 8 MB of RAM to boot. Either it's onchip memory or they found a way to share the RAM between both Linuxes (unlikely).
supportdata shows the Realtek specific modules rtl_nfbi.ko and rtk_atm.ko and the daemons avm2rtk_xdsld and controllerd.
More details once 7520v2 Firmware-Scans for both Linuxes are finished.
