Details

mpoad is the RTL86 Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) client daemon.

Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM is a standard specified in RFC-2684 which replaces RFC-1483.

See also the Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Wikipedia page.

mpoad performs the multiplexing of virtual connections (PVCs / VLANs) supporting these modes:

  • 1483 Bridged (VCMUX / LLC / AUTO)
  • 1483 Router (VCMUX / LLC / AUTO)

It gets its configuration from /etc/hosts.atm, /etc/e164_cc and from the MIB maintained by libmib.so.

On the RTL86 chipset the MIB is the curretly applied and running system configuration in memory, including status info of all
affected system parts. It could be compared to the UI-Modules of FRITZ!OS, containing all live info for the Webinterface.
Most of the MIB system is unused in conjunction with FRITZ!OS. More details in the libmib.so article.

mpoad opens the named pipe /tmp/serv_fifo for communication with mpoactl and endptd.
It is started by libmib.so. configd just checks for its PID.

fw 7.30 help from the strings:

usage: mpoad [-b] [[-c number] [-e 0|1] [-a [itf.]vpi.vci]*]*

This may be the help string for communication from mpoactl.

RTL-Research

Note that research on the RTL86 chipset and its Linux and drivers is very difficult and the results are highly unfinished.

Source

The names of source files compiled into an executable often help to understand function blocks (and show gaps in the docs).
fw 7.30 source files:

$ strings /bin/mpoad | grep -e '\.c$' -e '\.cpp$'

The (main/scrpn/boot/arm/prx/atom) label in the Model column shows which CPU is meant for models with multiple Linux instances.
Note that this list is merged from Firmware-Probes of all known AVM firmware for a model, including Recovery.exe and Labor-Files.
