Details
nvi is the AVM wrapper to use the vi text editor on TFFS character devices.
On most models all TFFS-Configuration files in /var/flash are no real files but device nodes created with mknod.
They do not have a file size but list the major / minor arguments passed to mknod to create them:

The c states its a charater device. The position normally listing the file size shows it has major 240 and minor 113.
These special files can only be handled by stream processing commands like cat, grep, sed and all other
commands which can read from stdin and output to stdout, thus support input and output redirection and pipes.
The size of these special files can only be found by reading its stream to the end. wc is a stream processor:

The vi text editor is no stream processor, it needs to know the file size to allocate a buffer for it.
That's why AVM wrote the nvi wrapper script.
root@fritz:/var/mod/root# nvi usage: nvi <config-filename>
Simplified it does:
cat <config-filename> > /var/nvi.tmp vi /var/nvi.tmp cat /var/nvi.tmp > <config-filename>
vi works on a temp file which is read and written back by the stream processor cat.
